An innovative and convenient computer mouse is the trackball mouse. Track balls are also known as roller balls. The device is stationary. It is a pointing device which has a ball held by a socket. This in turn contains a sensor to detect the rotation of the ball on two axes. It is like a conventional mouse placed upside down with a protruding ball. The ball is rolled by the user with his thumb, fingers or palm allowing the cursor to move. The traditional mouse requires the user to perform three tasks at a go: holding, moving and clicking the buttons. By design in a trackball mouse the user can perform these functions separately. The size of the ball varies from one as small as a marble to balls large as a cue ball. The smaller the size the less amount of effort is exerted to roll the ball.
The advantage of the trackball mouse is that the space required is minimal. Unlike the traditional mouse it does to need to be moved around a pad. It can be placed within easy reach and as it is stationary the effort put in the rotating of the ball is less. This kind of a mouse is useful when travelling. Care has to be exercised while choosing a trackball mouse. The usage and configuration has to be kept in mind. There are different types for gaming and for regular use. An ergonomic trackball mouse is also available which ensures that the hands are moved with less stress.
